Trasvase Olmos Irrigation Project
Olmos irrigation and hydropower megaproject in Peru is hailed a ‘masterpiece of engineering’ aimed at stimulating rural development. The project includes the construction of a concrete-faced rockfill dam, the Limón Dam, located in the Peruvian Andes on the Huancabamba River. The current as-built height of the dam is 43 m, and the Regional Government of Lambayeque plans to operate it at its current elevation for approximately 15 years. After that, the dam will be raised to a final height of 85 m.
The project brings water from the Atlantic side of the Andes to the Pacific side through a tunnel in the mountains, to irrigate the arid Olmos Valley in the country’s north-western region of Lambayeque and open up 38,500 hectares of land for farming. Major excavations have been made in the rock outcrops located north and east of the dam spillway to enable the construction of the dam spillway. The Limon Dam diverts water from the Huancabamba River into a 20 km long and 4.8 m wide Trans-Andean tunnel, to the other side of the continental divide.
Encardio-rite supplied risk assessment safety instruments for the Project through its marketing associates in Peru.
