Musaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall Project

The Musaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall Tunnel project in Qatar is a vital stormwater management initiative that ensures sustainable water discharge. Located near Hamad International Airport, the project features a 10 km offshore tunnel and a pump station with a capacity of 19.7 cubic meters per second. Encardio Rite provided turnkey geotechnical monitoring solutions, including inclinometers, piezometers, pressure cells, and 3D deformation targets to ensure shaft stability and groundwater management. The project ensures environmental safety and real-time data monitoring for structural stability.

Musaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall Project

Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel is the second phase of the Mesaimeer Surface and Ground Water Drainage Tunnel Project, which will provide a sustainable solution for the discharge of surface and stormwater.

The project's scope of work involves designing and constructing Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel projects, which will provide a sustainable solution for discharge surface and stormwater. It includes building a pumping station with ten pumps and auxiliary facilities. The project also includes the construction of a 10 km tunnel offshore with a 3.7 m diameter. The project is designed to ensure the preservation of the marine environment, as the water that will be pumped complies with the environmental assessment standards, and it is discharged 10 km off-shore to reduce the effect on the marine environment.

The newly constructed pumping station will be located at the end of Mesaimeer Tunnel south of Hamad International Airport. It will operate at 19.7 cubic meters per second and pump water from the Mesaimeer Tunnel, completed in 2016, to the new outfall tunnel.

Encardio-rite’s sister concern, Encardio-rite Geosystems WLL in Qatar, was awarded an I&M sub-contract for the turnkey monitoring solutions that included:

  • Supply & Installation of geotechnical and geodetic instruments.
  • Monitoring of instruments
  • Daily, weekly & monthly reporting with interpretation
  • Dilapidation survey (Pre-post construction survey) of all nearby structures, utilities, and road/ground surfaces.

Monitoring instruments were used to at shafts during excavations and open ground areas during civil construction and included:

  • Inclinometers were used around shafts to monitor lateral movements
  • Standpipe piezometers were used around excavation shafts to monitor groundwater level
  • Piezometers were used near shaft excavations to monitor groundwater pressure as a build-up of excess pressure on the excavation walls could lead to hydraulic instability.
  • Pressure cells were used on shotcrete linings to assess the adequacy of lining shotcrete and to determine contact pressure on retaining and diaphragm walls.
  • Bireflex and prism targets were used around shaft excavation to monitor 3D deformation/movements.
  • Surface settlement points on surfaces, curbs, pavements, structures, and utilities were used to monitor ground settlement.
