Kai Tak Utility Tunnel

The Kai Tak Utility Tunnel, part of Hong Kong's infrastructure development, plays a vital role in lighting up the Kai Tak area. Encardio Rite provided geotechnical monitoring instruments for this project, including digital inclinometers and magnetic extensometers to monitor sub-surface lateral movement and settlement. The project implemented strict safety and environmental measures to minimize risks and reduce waste. By using advanced instrumentation and sustainable construction practices, the Kai Tak Utility Tunnel ensures long-term stability and safety for the surrounding infrastructure.

Kai Tak Utility Tunnel

After three years of construction, the CLP Kai Tak Cable Tunnel is important in lighting up the Kai Tak development area. This project involved the construction of an underground utility tunnel above the Kai Tak vehicle tunnel. The project team implemented specific environmental and safety measures during construction to minimize the impact and risks involved. This included the reuse of sea mud as backfill materials to reduce the waste discharge, the use of an RC loader instead of hand-dug work to lower workers' time in the tunnel environment; welding was substituted by bolted connections for the E&M installation inside the tunnel to minimize safety risks associated with working in confined spaces.

Encardio-rite supplied safety monitoring instruments for the project. The geotechnical instrumentation was supplied through our Marketing Associate in Hong Kong and included digital inclinometers with InclinoView software to monitor subsurface lateral movement and a magnetic extensometer to monitor subsurface settlement.
