Doha Marriott Gulf Hotel (Heritage) Qatar

The Doha Marriott Hotel, formerly known as Gulf Hotel, is an iconic heritage structure in Doha, Qatar, built-in 1973. It is a 5-star, 378-key resort located near the airport and business district in the Southwest part of Doha, with a total built-up area of 62,775 m².

Katara Hospitality, a global hotel owner, developer, and operator based in Qatar, aimed to renovate the hotel to celebrate Qatar's heritage and restore the building's original iconic identity. UrbaCon Trading & Contracting (UCC) was appointed as the contractor for the renovation.

The project included a complete renovation master plan, rehabilitation, expansion, reconstruction, and the introduction of new facilities. The new construction included two blocks of 7 and 11 floors, a podium, underground parking, a Marina building with parking, day-use cabins, multiple pools, ancillary buildings, and landscaping.

Scope of Works

Encardio-Rite's scope of works included:

  • Pre and post-construction building condition survey for existing structures.
  • Supply and installation of instrumentation.
  • Manual monitoring and reporting of data.

Instruments Used

Several Model EDJ-40C mechanical-type surface-mounting uniaxial crack meters were used to monitor changes in the width of cracks on the four existing structures. The crack meter installation locations were selected based on the pre-construction building condition survey report. The team in Doha, Qatar, collected data manually at desired intervals during the piling and construction activities.

Installing crack meters was challenging as the buildings were quite old and had uneven outer surfaces.

Results

The pre-construction and post-construction building condition survey reports, along with the crack monitoring data report, enabled smooth work progress. They helped the contractor stay aware of the structural health of structures within the construction zone and ensured that they were not being impacted by the ongoing piling, excavation, and other construction activities in the vicinity.
