Al Quds Tower

The Al Quds Tower, an iconic 500-meter, 100-story skyscraper in Doha, Qatar, features advanced geotechnical monitoring by Encardio Rite. Partnering with Ammico Contracting Company, Encardio Rite provided foundation instruments, including inclinometers, Jackout pressure cells, load cells, sister bars, tilt meters, and crack gauges. These instruments ensured safe excavation and monitored diaphragm wall behavior during the construction of this monumental structure. The monitoring solutions helped verify design integrity and prevent deflection or stress on adjacent structures, contributing to the safe realization of a future landmark.

Al Quds Tower

The Al Quds tower construction, with 500 m height, 100 stories, and five basements, was a challenge at the time. Once built, it was to be the most innovative human habitat and the greatest landmark of Doha. This icon building could symbolically be linked with Al Quds trough, the analogy with the Dome of the Rock, the most essential and ancient monument in Islamic culture.

The foundation works included a diaphragm wall. The diaphragm wall's toe level was up to -30 m, and the excavation level was also up to -24 m. During excavation/foundation works, many instruments, as per the designers' specifications, were supplied and installed, and the behavior of the diaphragm wall was closely monitored.

Encardio Rite supplied foundation instruments to Al Quds through Ammico Contracting Company, which was awarded the contract for piling and foundation work in 2009. Instrumentation included:

  • Inclinometers were used to monitor lateral movement in the ground and in the diaphragm wall
  • Jackout pressure cells were used to monitor ground stress on the diaphragm wall
  • Anchor bolt load cells were used to monitor load on anchors
  • Sister bars were used in the diaphragm walls to monitor stress
  • Tilt meters (plates with portable readout system) were used on adjacent structures within the zone of influence to monitor any deflection caused by excavation works.
  • Crack gages were used on adjacent structures within the zone of influence to monitor any existing critical crack.

Encardio Rite also conducted a pre-construction building condition survey of the adjacent structures within the construction works' zone of influence.
